Unis take state 1A Track and Field title

GREENSBORO -- The N.C. School of Science and Math boys needed at least a fifth-place finish in the 1,600-meter relay, the final event of the day to win the state 1-A track & field championship on Friday at N.C. A&T.

And that's exactly what the Unicorns did, beating Hendersonville for the title by 0.17 points in the closest finish in the history of the meet, according to the N.C. High School Athletic Association.

In the girls' meet, Science & Math took second place, just five points behind North Rowan's 80.

The NCSSM boys finished with 58 points, while Hendersonville, which finished third in the 1,600 relay, had 57.83 points.

But NCSSM's 1,600 relay unit of Joshua Quinnett, Andrew Chung, Max Ammons and Kenyon Williams finished fifth in 3:32.97.

If NCSSM had finished a spot lower or Hendersonville a spot higher, the title would have gone to Hendersonville.

The 3,200 relay of Michael Jones, Chris Maynor, Matt Jordan and Ammons finished second in a time of 8:19.35.

Antonio Kornegay was second in the boys' shot put with a toss of 48-7 1/2.

Jones was second in the 3,200 in 10:27.27, while Jordan was fourth in 10:39.79 and Kerry Ellwanger was eighth in 10:51.08.

Jordan finished third in the 1,600 in 4:40.78, while Jones was fourth in 4:42.02.

Ammons was fifth in the 800 in 2:03.90, while Maynor was sixth in 2:06.44 and Samuel Jacobs was ninth in 2:08.62.

Morton finished sixth in the 300 hurdles in a time of 42.71.

Chung was seventh in the triple jump with an effort of 42-8 1/2 and ninth in the long jump with a leap of 20-8 3.4.

The 400 relay of Joshua Quinnett, Travis Morton, Adam Hawkins and Kenyon Williams finsished eighth in 44.96.

Science Math won the girls' 3,200 relay in a time of 9:50.11 with Stefanie Schwemlein, Callie Turlington, Ashley Baker and Frances Dougherty.

The 1,600 relay of KeAira Roland, Raven Foust, Turlington and Collene McGuire also was won by Unicorns in a time 4:08.42.

McGuire won the 400 in 58.51 and finished fourth in the pole vault, clearing 8-6.

Dougherty finished second in the 1,600 in 5:20.20 and also in the 3,200 in a time of 11:48.86.

Turlington was fourth in the 800 in 2:25.12 and fifth in the 1,600 5:26.72.

The 800 relay team of Roland, Ade Ilesanmi, Foust and McGuire finished fifth in 1:49.42.

Chelsea Lineberger finished sixth in the discus with a throw of 99 feet.

Schwemlein finished sixth in the 3,200 in a time of 12:54.24

Foust tied for sixth in the high jump, clearing 5-0.

Baker was eighth in the 800, followed by teammate Kagan Griffin, who finished in 2:35.
